Objectives The objective of this subject is the basic education of the student in transmission media, including the characterization of the signals, the analysis of the adequate transmission techniques, and the study of complete systems.

Besides providing the basic education in transmission systems, the subject intends that the student achieve a structured vision of the transmission related problems where further knowledge could be integrated. Therefore, it considers:

* The introduction to commonly used technological solutions and, through their analysis, the development of the studentīs common sense.
* A first contact with recommendations and standards and with the handling of large volumes of data, graphics, and formulae required to solve real problems.
* The acquisition of a reference framework for the subsequent communication-related subjects.

So, this subject holds a joint character between a basic one and a technological one:
* Its basic character is shown in the use of ideal models of the studied systems, helping the student to achieve a structured vision.
* Its technological character is shown in the reference to real systems on which the most important networks are built, simplified to the studentīs level.
