Objectives OBJECTIVES:

The program has been designed to cover 30 lective hours. Its main objective is that the students develop and improve their oral comprehension and expression skills.

With that purpose the student will have to:

1. Familiarize with the basic principles of English pronunciation, intonation and rhythm, in order to understand native speakers better and speak English in a clearer and more natural way.

2. Practice certain expressions and specific linguistic functions related to their social and professional environment. For instance, introductions, requests, proposals, recommendations and suggestions; agreeing and disagreeing, polite interruptions and clarifications.

3. Become familiar with courtesy codes, register and expressions specific of English telephone calls.

4. Recognize and use the most appropriate registers for each situation depending on the relation established by the speakers (subordinate, colleague or superior).

5. Participate actively in conversations, talks and debates in the clearest and most natural way possible, through the practice of real as well as fictional situations (role-play and simulation activities).

Syllabus UNIT DEVELOPMENT

A.I. Organizing meetings and discussions

Unit 1. Introducing, keeping communication open and closing meetings.

Timing: 4 hours

Functions and grammar: Expressions and grammar structures used for introducing self and others; for introducing, keeping communication open and closing a meeting.

Aims:

. To give students practice in introducing themselves and others.
. To make students aware of the main parts of a meeting and their communicative functions.
. To teach students some expressions used in introducing a meeting or discussion.
. To teach students some expressions used in keeping communication open during a meeting or discussion.
. To teach students some expressions used in closing a meeting or discussion.
. To give students advice on “dos and don’ts” for holding a successful meeting.

A.II. Participating in meetings and discussions

Unit 2. Exchanging opinions, agreeing and disagreeing.

Timing: 6 hours

Functions and grammar: Expressions and grammar structures used for giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing politely.

Aims:

. To teach students how to ask for and how to give opinions, show agreement and disagreement in an appropriate and effective way.
. To give them practice in the previous communicative functions.
. To make students be aware of neutral, formal and informal expressions used for showing agreement and disagreement.

A.II. Participating in meetings and discussions

Unit 3. Handling suggestions and proposals. Requesting, accepting and rejecting them politely.

Timing: 6 hours

Functions and grammar: Expressions and grammar structures used to request and make suggestions or proposals. Those used for accepting or rejecting them politely.

Aims:

. To teach students those expressions and grammar structures used in making suggestions and recommendations and how to accept or reject them in an appropriate way according to different registers.
. To give students practice in the previous communicative functions.

A.II. Participating in meetings and discussions

Unit 4. Interrupting politely, asking for clarification, clarifying an idea.

Timing 4 hours

Functions and grammar: Expressions and grammar structures used for interrupting politely, asking for clarification or further information, clarifying and paraphrasing.

Aims:

. To teach students the appropriate way to interrupt someone and politely ask for clarification or further explanation.
. To teach students the expressions used for clarifying an idea.
. To give students practice in the previous communicative functions.

A.III. Reporting meetings and discussions

Unit 5. The minutes of a meeting.

Timing: 4 hours.

Functions and grammar:

. Revision of the changes implied when converting “direct speech” into “reported speech”.
. Reporting expressions.

Aims:

. To teach students how to present and organize the reporting of meetings.
. To give students practice in summarizing relevant and essential information from a meeting.
. To help students use appropriate vocabulary and grammar structures for the reporting of meetings.

B. Phone skills in English

Unit 6. Making professional calls, responding to professional calls and taking phone messages.

Timing: 6 hours

Functions and grammar: Common polite expressions and vocabulary used in professional phone calls in British and American English. Grammar structures and vocabulary used when taking messages on the phone and reporting information.

Aims:

. To help students overcome some difficulties arisen when talking on the phone in a foreign language.
. To make students aware of the importance of politeness in this particular skill.
. To teach students how to make polite, clear and effective phone calls.
. To teach students how to respond to a phone call politely and effectively.
. To teach students how to take clear phone messages.
. To give students practice in all the previous skills.

SOURCES

The material used for the teaching of the previous contents will comprise a number of textbooks, audition and video tapes from various sources. Some of them can be found in the school library as well as its audio and video sections. Additionally, other material sources will be used, including authentic recordings and texts from various publications and the Internet.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES

Option A.

By means of active participation of the student in class. This highly personal option requires:

a) Continuous and regular attendance to the course.
b) The handing in of group and individual work at the requested dates.

Material didáctico utilizado

El material utilizado para la enseñanza de estos contenidos estará compuesto de una variedad de libros de texto, cintas de audición y vídeo de diversa temática, principalmente, la relacionada con el mundo de las telecomunicaciones.
